The Herringbone type systems where cows are positioned along each side of a pit are the most popular style of milking system around the world. These parlors can be designed with the cows standing at 90 degrees, on an angle or parallel to the pit however the position of the cow will greatly affect the required length of the pit for the number of cows to be milked at one time.
The position of the milk-line and associated equipment can also vary depending on the operatorís preference. A double-up system means that there is a set of cups for each cow position while in a swingover there is a set of cups for every two cow positions. In the double-up system the milk-line can be in a lowline, midline or highline position while in the swingover the milk-line can only be in the highline position to allow the cups to swing back and forth across the pit.
The looped milk-line is by far the most popular design as it offers superior vacuum stability and washing. The system utilizes two milk-lines ( either 76mm or 100mm diameter) mounted side by side traveling the length of the milking platform. These two lines are joined by stainless steel bends at one end and the milk receiver at the other forming a complete loop.
On one of the milk-line entries into the receiver a butterfly valve is positioned and during milking this valve is open to allow milk in that line to flow into the milk receiver. However in the wash mode the valve is closed and the wash water floods that end of the milk-line. An air injector is positioned on the top of the milk-line at the valve and air is injected into the line which causes the wash water to blast around the full length of the looped milk-line and into the milk receiver. This high powered cleaning ensures the milking system is left hygienically clean.
